Story of Shirat Hayam

Maskiot’s residents originally lived in Shirat Hayam (“Song of the Sea”), Gush Katif. Shirat Hayam was founded in November 2000 by two remarkable young women who decided to build a new community in response to the tragic terrorist attack which killed a young boy, a young girl, and seriously maimed two teachers and dozens of young children.

The community of twenty-one, idealistic, Zionist families worked in farming, teaching and small business enterprises.

In August 2005, Shirat Hayam’s residents were uprooted along with all the other communities of Gush Katif.

After a long search and considering many sites, these residents decided to establish their new permanent community in Maskiot in the Jordan Valley.
